The Great Outdoors

The Great Outdoors

Summer is here, and there is no better time to get out and be “one with nature”. From birds and bees to mountains and trees, the Great Outdoors provides some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring photography subjects and that’s why it is our Discovery Center theme for the next two months.

Some of you who receive our weekly newsletter and visit our website regularly have probably noticed a commonality to our featured tutorials, contests, tips and other content. We thought we’d go into a bit more detail here on this blog, to give you a better understanding of how the Discovery Center themes work, and how they can help you improve your photography skills and win great prizes!

Each month or two, we select a new theme that will be our focus for the next 4-8 weeks. Sometimes the theme is seasonal like Fall Landscapes; other times the theme is a subject that you, our users, have expressed an interest in (like our recent Urban Scenes theme). Then, within that broad theme we select a number of specific “sub-themes” for each week.

You’re probably wondering, “How will this help me win prizes?” Here’s how.

Step 1. Read our featured tutorial of the week

Our featured tutorial of the week is chosen to provide you with learning content related to the weekly theme. It may be a photography tutorial with tips for photographing that particular subject, like Using Natural Light for Still Life Photography. Or it may be a photo editing tutorial that will help you fix or enhance your photos, like How to Use Magic Fill to Remove Unwanted Objects. You can find the featured tutorial on the home page of our website, and in our weekly newsletter.

Step 2. Enter our weekly photo challenge

This is your chance to take what you’ve learned in our featured tutorial and put it into practice. It’s also a great place to see the work of other photographers, exchange ideas and learn from each other. We announce the weekly photo challenge theme via social media at the beginning of the week and invite you to share your photos on our Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ pages.

Step 3. Enter our photo contest

Now that you’ve taken what you learned in our featured tutorial, and put it into practice with our weekly photo challenge, it’s time to select your best image and enter it in our photo contest! Just make sure you review the information on our contest page first. We have had such great participation in our previous contests and are thrilled to see the amazing, talented and creative work our users submit – keep it coming!

Here is a sneak peek at our weekly themes for the Great Outdoors.

We hope our tutorials and tips are inspiring you to keep learning, mastering new techniques, and taking your creativity to the next level. We’re looking forward to seeing your photos of the Great Outdoors over the next couple months. Happy summer everyone!
