Novit’s Department Store was a staple in downtown Walterboro, South Carolina. My grandmother worked here in the 1940’s and sold many items to young Army men who would come by bus from their bases in Charleston and Columbia to shop. The store is long gone, but the signage and all of its glorious art deco-style architecture remains.
Fun fact – The movie “Radio” was shot almost exclusively in Walterboro because of it’s old-town charm. Look closely and you’ll see Novit’s featured promptly throughout the film.
