Learn how to paint a grainy pencil sketch from scratch using New Simple Water brush from the Digital Watercolor category, with guidance from Painter Master Elite Karen Bonaker.

Karen walks you through the process used to create the sketch with the Grainy Cover Pencil from the Pencils, Pens and Markers brush category, how to add a watercolor paper overlay to give texture, and how to lock the sketch on a new layer and set the composite method to Multiply for transparency.

Working with the New Simple Water brush, Karen starts by using light pressure to paint in the lightest values, following the contours of the petals and leaves. Next, harder pressure is used to develop the darkest values, which will add depth and dimension to the piece. To create an overlay of color and add a warmer value overall, Karen uses a glazing technique on a new layer, bringing the various elements of the painting into harmony. Final details are added using the Spatter Water brush to add textural interest.
