By: Magdalena Proszowska

Concept artist Magdalena Proszowska walks you through her entire creative process behind the beautiful Painter Essentials 6 artwork. She first creates a few sketches with different compositions and ideas, then chooses the one she wants to create. Her next step is to polish the sketch by adding  more refined lines and details for the basic shape of the anatomy. Once the sketch is complete, Madga selects a background color for the canvas and then builds the color composition of the painting with a large brush.

Throughout the painting process she finds it helpful to flip her canvas horizontally from time to time, to help refresh her vision of the picture and detect any issues with symmetry. At this early stage, she works on the full canvas, instead of zooming in to focus on particular areas, so the whole picture develops in a balanced manner. Bit by bit, the painting develops as fine details, shadows and highlights, and effects are added. It is helpful to work on several layers if you are not sure what kind of effects you want to add – this way, it is easy to hide or delete a layer you’re not happy with, without losing the rest of your work. Working on layers also makes it easy to move individual elements around, when you get to the stage of refining specific features of the face.

Now that you have had a quick demonstration of the creative process, be sure to check out the rest of the tutorials that will provide a more in-depth look at painting elements like eyes, lips and hair.
