I have Pro Paint Shop 2018 and I want to create a circular photo but crop doesn’t do it and if I create a vignette the square outline is black, how do I get rid of that

      Hello Tina,

What image format are you saving to? Image files are always technically rectangular (it’s a function of how computers understand them), so in order to make a photo appear circular you need to make the area outside the circle transparent. Not all image formats understand transparency, so we would suggest saving your file as a .png to make sure it this information is preserved.

With that out of the way, an easy way to crop down to a circle would be to create a vignette as you did before, then select the black outer space with either the magic wand tool or the smart selection brush, and press the delete key. That will remove the black outer area and replace it with a transparency (or ‘alpha’) region, which is represented as a black and white checkered space. Save your image to a transparency-supporting format like .png, and you are good to go!

      Hope this helps,

I’m trying to compile a Shutterfly photo book and need to improve the resolution of two photos, per the suggestion of Shutterfly. One photo is a black and white high school portrait and the other is a color photo of a restaurant sign. How do I improve the resolution of an existing photo? Or, can I even do that with paintshop pro

    thanks much

      Hello Tommy,

Starting with a new program is often a little intimidating! Especially when it has as many tools, workspaces, and features as a photo editing program like PaintShop Pro. We would suggest starting with a tutorial like Getting Started with PaintShop Pro for a demonstration of the program layout, and then if you are looking to practice, moving to some of the projects found in our PaintShop Pro for Beginners set of videos!

      Hope this helps,

I have just bought Paint shop Pro and when I watch the tutorials., the screen on the tutorials bears no resemblance to my screen. In each tutorial, there are very clear icons down the left hand side as well as along the top, but there are none on my screen. I have general headings.
I am also having great difficulty loading an album of old photos on to the programme. Can you help please?

      Hello Jean,

It sounds like you are using the Essentials workspace! PaintShop Pro defaults to this simpler workspace when first installed, as the full suite of tools can be a little intimidating to new users.

You can switch to the Complete workspace by going to File > Workspace, and selecting Complete.

As for loading your photos, how are you attempting to load them, and what problems are you running into? We can certainly take a look at this with you!
