By Aaron Rutten
Learn how to draw a realistic wolf using Corel Painter 2015 digital painting software and a graphics tablet, in this step-by-step lesson from Painter Master Aaron Rutten.
In this art tutorial, Aaron starts with a rough sketch and adds layers for each overlapping object. The layers are filled with solid colors and then form is added by shading with lighter and darker values. Fur is added using a custom Particle Brush called ‘Grass Blades’. Fur can also be implied by adding paper texture with the chalk brush and then blending it to create small clumps of hair. Color is added on separate layers much like a traditional glaze. Final touches are added like focal blurring and falling snow to give the piece depth and motion.
This illustration was created with Corel Painter and a Wacom Cintiq, but you can use any drawing tablet. The digital painting techniques in this lesson can be applied to Photoshop, ArtRage and many other digital and traditional art applications.
