There are lots of skills that go in to taking great portraits – capturing the essence of an emotion or a personality requires thinking beyond the technicalities of light and lens. To hone your craft, offer to take photos of people you know. Because you are comfortable with them, you will feel free to experiment and try new things. And you will build confidence, so that in a professional shoot, you are comfortable giving instructions and moving from one scene or pose to another.
