AfterShot Pro 3 Updates Now Available: Canon 80D, New Presets & Silicon Bonk

One of the big benefits of AfterShot Pro is its ability to dynamically deploy updates—camera profiles, plugins and presets—in a way that lets us turn around new camera profiles faster than ever before.

So it’s with great pleasure that we announce the rollout of our first set of updates for AfterShot Pro 3, just over two weeks since launch.

Before I jump into what’s new, I’d like to send a big shout out to everyone who’s already upgraded to AfterShot Pro 3. If you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you waiting for?

What’s New in Get More

Right now, you can download the highly popular Canon 80D RAW profile, an updated Silicon Bonk plugin, and an all-new Cinematic preset pack—each dynamically updated in the Get More tab on Mac and Windows versions of AfterShot Pro 3. If you’re on Linux, where the Get More function is not currently supported, you can access these new additions via the AfterShot Resources page.

The Canon 80D Profile

Our most requested camera since the launch of ASP3—by a country mile—has been the new Canon 80D.

We’ve been pretty impressed with this new crop-sensor shooter in the Canon enthusiast lineup (given its brand-new 24MP sensor and 45-crosspoint autofocus system) and it seems you have been too.

So, after the launch of AfterShot Pro 3, our team got down to work on this new profile and here it is-ready for you to download absolutely free!

Silicon Bonk Update

Another thing we’ve been hearing from the community since launch are reports of issues with running the Silicon Bonk plugin in ASP3—so we took care of that, too.

If you’re not familiar with Silicon Bonk, it’s a powerful plugin created by the talented Spoilerhead and Grubernd (Bernd, a moderator of the ASP forum).

Back when it was first released in the forum, Bernd said he designed Silicon Bonk because he “couldn’t find a B&W tool that could do fast and simple conversions from already tweaked color images, while still allowing for a wide range of adjustments—something I wanted to have for my reportage and wedding work.”

“You need to correct and deliver the color images anyway,” he added. “[So] if you can build the B&W conversion on all the work you already put in, you save a lot of time and raise the quality. And while I forgot the saturation slider in the original design, it now allows for this plugin also to deliver color images.”

So… What’s Next? Tell Us What You Want to See!

Since the launch of AfterShot Pro 3 we’ve received many comments, requests and suggestions. As we develop AfterShot, we always want to hear what our users would like to see added, changed and improved.

One item we’ve heard via our feedback loop is an intermittent issue with pink hue appearing on (generally very overexposed) images when adjusting highlights or exposure. Thanks again to those who’ve been in touch to let us know about what they’ve experienced. We’ve already started working on the issue and are currently looking for additional info to help us resolve it. If you have experienced this, please hit the ‘feedback’ button in-app and tell us which camera you have. We may want to reach out to you for a sample image. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Alex,

Looks great! 🙂 Is the Linux bug solved with this update? I want to upgrade, but there were problems with Linux crashing all the time, right from the start of the program. I’m using LInux myself and waiting to upgrade until this is solved.

    ‘Hang tight’ is one of the most used replies Alex 🙁 and everything is going in circles. There are enough people on the forum who can help because they cannot use the Linux version.

Oh, and about wishes for camera profiles? I guess the new Fuji X-Pro2 and the upcoming XT-2 would be on my personal wishlist. Besides that, much better RAF conversion in general (detail, too much red), because of all my images only about one third is useable. The rest I cannot get to look as good as the jpegs that come out of my XT-1.

I can’t use Aftershot Pro because of its handling of metadata. It doesn’t matter what the “standard” is, because there really isn’t one in practice and programs need to work with each other. Most programs expect jpg metadata to be written back to the file, and not stored in an external sidecar. Aftershot Pro does this, in fact, on file export. There needs to be an option to write XMP metadata back to the file in formats that support it, most especially in jpg. Thank you

  Hey Jonz, AfterShot Pro 3 does this already for you when you export. When setting up your batch export, be sure to visit the Metadata section and check the boxes to embed IPTC, EXIF and other metadata. Hope this helps.

    Actually, that doesn’t answer the question. I already noted that Aftershot writes metadata to the jpg internally on export.
    
    The problem is with how it stores jpg metadata for the unexported files in the catalog. Many programs expect this metadata to be stored in the jpg itself. Storing it in an xmp sidecar file, results in breaking compatibility.

  I don’t consider this a problem myself, because I only need the metadata to be inside the files only for selected images I want to use in other programs, online or offline. And at that point there is compatibility.

    OK, perhaps it’s not a problem for you but let me give you a real world example in terms of my workflow.
    
    I have many thousands of photographs, and I prefer not to be reliant (long term or short-term) on one software package for editing. I do not want to create file copies all the time for each edit – that’s a great advantage of non-destructive editing – right?
    
    At present my favorite editors are Lightroom and Photoshop. My digital archive manager of choice is IMatch. I would be happy to use Aftershot because it’s a good non-destructive editor without a lot superfluous features, but many other software packages (including those named) expect jpgs to have internal metadata, and very few that I know of (besides Aftershot) expect (and work) with the jpg/xml combination. Same with TIF.
    
    I prefer forward and backward compatibility…it’s your own insurance policy. Yes, your specific photo edits won’t work between Lightroom and Aftershot (unfortunately!) but the work you do on metadata should be interchangeable (and I do quite a bit).

Support for the Olympus OMD EM-10 II would be appreciated.

Might also be helpful if when asking for support and repeatedly mentioning that you are using Fedora, for your support staff to not repeatedly give out irrelevant instructions for windows. Then ignoring you when you point out this isn’t helpful, isn’t, well….. helpful!

Thanks for the quick reply!

I really want to support developers like yourselves who do try and support Linux, (plus I don’t like to see any one entity have a monopoly). But it becomes so frustrating when you go the extra mile to support such development only for the organisation to fail at the very basics.

Anyway the issue was back in Feb and assigned ticket #3041798. Sadly as I couldn’t even get Aftershot to run I haven’t been able to purchases it.

There was a second issue I had with the OM-D E-M10, which was listed as supported at the time, but only if I edited the Exif data and changed the ‘model’ field to read as an E-M5. Would this be now fixed in ASP3?

    About the Linux problem I (again) refer to lots of comments on Facebook and the forum. I did not upgrade myself yet because there has been absolutely no answer to the questions of Linux users about the problems they are experiencing.

Hey Guys, some Questions:

– are you currently working on the CR2 bug “no image available” from serval Cameras? Mine is a Canon 60D working with MacOS.
– are you currently working on the Linux bug “no get more” button i think that is the button you need to open the Discovery center to install automatically the Camera updates.

And another question why is no reaction in the support forum from corel? Are you hoping the bug dissapears suddenly :P. I thing the only action is that all possible new costumers go away when they feel their problems are not heard….. thank you very much for your answer :).

If you are using ASP3 on Linux, the Get More content is currently available for download from the Discovery Center (http://corl.co/1OdIi8A). Just downloaded AfterShot Pro 3 and it does not open Canon 80D RAW images (CR2). So far tech support seems to be dragging its feet and I suspect that despite the specs stated in the program help section, that I must make some additional tweak or maybe Corel has a bug. Running Win 10

To take advantage of the new RAW profiles that have been dynamically added to ASP3, like the Canon 80D, all you need to do is visit the Get More tab in-app or go to the AfterShot Resources page on the Corel Discovery Center and download the profile. A link to the Discovery Center is above. Hope this helps!
