In the world of sports, life moves extremely fast. Being able to catch great and historic moments on camera requires skill, patience and a little agility on the photographer’s part – not just the athlete’s!
A few tips to keep in mind while shooting sports photography:
- Use a fast shutter to capture sharp shots of the fast action and use the fastest drive setting your camera has. The more shots your camera can take per second, the more likely you will capture just the right shot of the fast moving action.
- There is often not time to be playing with your camera settings. Set your aperture to a good, versatile setting like f/8, and then forgot about it and focus on being where you need to be to take the best possible shots. It’s better to have a good shot of the goal being scored than a perfectly crisp shot of the net three seconds later!
- Don’t shoot just the action. Look for emotion from the fans or from the players after the action has stopped. Emotion of loss can sometimes lead to better shots than the elation of victory. There is often a story behind the action that can be the bigger story.
And, now for the good stuff.
