Don’t Flash Directly at Your Subject
A common mistake beginners make is to use a proper flash unit the exact same way they would use an on-camera flash – point it straight at the subject and fire. The main benefit of having a separate flash unit is that you have some control over how it is going to illuminate your image. Try aiming for the ceiling, wall, or table to diffuse the light.
