Put Graffiti in Context

Perhaps the most interesting thing about graffiti as an art form is that it is always presented in some strange or unusual setting. Think about it, if it’s in a gallery, it’s not really graffiti. So if you are photographing graffiti, keep this in mind. Think about how the art is interacting with its setting – is it picking up on colors? Following a curve or going around a corner? Responding to other graffiti? Saying something about the building or the neighborhood? If the artist has taken the time to think about the surroundings, then your photograph should aim to reflect this.
