So often, photos use the same scenery as backdrops over and over. While a sunset or a beach or a beautiful natural vista can be stunning, sometimes there is just as much to be said for standing out from the pack. The stark industry of an urban environment can make for some of the most unique and impactful backgrounds to your photos – and all without having to travel.
Nothing says industry like the coils and stacks of wiring and metal frames of a power plant or transformer. Most power plants won’t let the public onto the grounds themselves, but luckily, they’re very visible even from outside and can make an excellent background.
Construction sites can be huge pits or towering scaffolds – keep an eye out for the raw power of enormous heavy machinery. Just be sure to follow any safety warnings!
Nowhere else in a city can achieve the same sense of bleak isolation as an empty railroad track. Even well within city limits, tracks are often deserted and overgrown, giving you plenty of empty space to frame your subject.
Very little speaks to the might of human ingenuity like the span of a bridge. From ancient to incredibly modern, bridges come in many different forms. Some are instantly recognizable, and others completely unknown, but all give opportunities for uniquely framed photographs.
It doesn’t all have to be about industrial grunge and heavy machinery. Libraries are open to anyone, and the rows and rows of books and atmosphere of quiet contemplation set a mood that is just as strong in its own way for a photograph. Just make sure to keep quiet!
