Creating Advanced Title Effects

This Advanced Titles Tutorial builds on the previous Basic Titles Tutorial, which provided VideoStudio users with step-by-step instructions on how to add basic titles and simple text to their VSP projects. In this title effects tutorial, you will learn how to:

  • Add advanced title effects to a basic title
  • Edit effects in a title template
  • Animate a title along a path

If you want to follow along, you can download the Basic Titles project file, which we will build on in this tutorial. Make sure you download the .VSP project file as well as the 3 sample images.

Let’s get started!

  • Open VideoStudio into the Edit tab
  • Open the Creating Basic Titles .vsp project file

You should see the following in your gallery:

From the Basics tutorial, I created a new folder, by choosing the + Add button and dropping in some images to use as backgrounds for titles. You can, of course, place titles on videos, too!

Three images were placed onto the video track of the timeline. By double-clicking each asset in the timeline, each was adjusted to 5 seconds in length in the Options panel. You can also manually drag each one out in the timeline.

Adding Animations to your Titles

Add an animation effect to the first title:

  • Double-click the timeline’s first title to open the Options panel
  • Click to open the Attribute tab

  • If the Animation radio button is not already blue, click on it
  • Click the Apply checkbox under the Animation radio button
  • From the drop-down list, select the Swing category
  • Select the first choice in the second row (there’s no need to drop it on the title itself)

Preview your progress:

  • Click Project in the Preview window, rewind, and play through this part

  • Return to the Attribute panel for the first title

Note the blue-line in the Preview window. This denotes the pause duration of the animation sequence, which can be adjusted manually or from a pre-set.

  • Grab either end of the blue line and pull it slightly in either direction (this will lengthen or shorten the animation pause duration)

Use a preset, in the Attribute tab:

  • Click the TT next to the Swing drop-down list
  • From the Pause list, choose Intermediate
  • Feel free to test out other choices in this window
  • Click OK
  • Preview the change

Adding Filters to your Titles

Add a filter from the right side of the Attribute window:

  • Be sure the first title is double-clicked to select it in the Attribute tab
  • Click the Filter radio button (the Title Effects gallery should display on the left)
  • Drag and drop the Vignette effect right onto the first title in the timeline

Yes, you can add multiple effects to a title:

  • Drag and drop the Wind effect onto the same title
  • Both will now be listed in the Attribute > Filter window
  • Play this portion to preview

  • Select the Wind filter in the list
  • Click the Customize Filter icon

The Customize window displays a Before window on the left, an After window on the right, and a timeline of the effect underneath:

In the timeline are two small diamonds, in this case, one at the start and the other at the end.

These are keyframes, representing the start and end of a sequence of effects. Keyframes are where things start, change and end. You can add additional keyframes, then change the effect’s attributes.

In this case, you can change the level of the wind’s intensity:

  • Click the Play icon to preview the settings (notice the changes in the Level slider)
  • Place the playback head at the halfway point on the timeline
  • Click the Add key frame icon on the far left
  • Slide the Level slider all the way up to 60

  • Keep the wind at its max by moving to the final keyframe and increasing to 60 again
  • Using the Play button in this window, preview the changes
  • Watch the Level slider change

Let’s edit the second title:

  • In the main window, play the second title
  • Double-click on the second title to open the Options panel
  • In the Edit tab, select the Turn category from the drop-down list
  • Click once on the TT icon to customize it
  • Change it to Enter from the top and Exit to the bottom
  • Click OK and preview it

  • Click the Filter radio button (there are no filters attached to this effect yet)
  • Drag and drop the Mirror effect onto the second title

  • Optional: If you like, click Customize Filter and see what changes you can make
  • Try a few, preview them, and click OK when you’re done.
  • Preview these new adjustments

You can save any titles and customizations you create for future use:

  • Click the second title once to highlight it
  • In the Titles gallery, choose the My Favorites drop-down
  • Click the Add icon (the one with the star on it)

Your saved title will now be available every time you use VideoStudio!

Adding a Motion Path to your Titles

Let’s go over how to add an animated path to a title:

  • Click the third and last title once in the timeline
  • Click Play to preview what it currently looks like
  • Open the Path library

  • Drop the rotating star path (labeled P03) onto the title and preview
  • Drop the diamond-shaped star path (labeled P06) onto the title and preview
  • Note: Each chosen path will replace the previous one, but all title effects will remain

Congratulations, you’re now very familiar with advanced titling in VideoStudio!
