Exporting Videos with Transparent Background

Exporting Videos with Transparent Background

VideoStudio 2019 introduces support to export video with Alpha Channel, or better known as with a transparent background. Create your own unique overlays and export motion graphics, masks, or text with a transparent background. Create your video on the overlay track and export to .MOV with alpha channel.

Saving a track as an alpha channel video

You can save animated titles or objects (such as logos) as video files that support transparency so that you can share and reuse the videos as overlays in other video projects. For example, if you create a series of videos, you can overlay the start of each video with custom animation that identifies you or your company as the creator of the series.

To export a track as an alpha channel video

  1. In the Share workspace, click the Computer button.
  2. Click MOV.
  3. From the Profile drop-list, choose one of the Alpha channel video profiles.
  4. In the File name box, type a file name.
  5. In the File location box, specify the location where you want to save the file.
  6. Set any of the following options:
    • Create Preview Range Only — renders only the section of video that is selected between the Trim Markers in the Preview panel.
    • Enable Smart Render — analyzes a video for any previously rendered sections and renders only the new or revised sections. This can reduce rendering time significantly.
    • Enable Hardware Encoder Acceleration — can speed up processing by optimizing available hardware. Choose an option from the Type drop-down list (see other settings in Preferences > Performance > Hardware acceleration).
  7. In the Export Track drop-down list, choose the track that you want to export.
  8. Click Start. The exported video preserves any transparent areas.

I want to create a continuous colorful running backgrounds to cover all the black in background when changing pictures/slides. I am not sure what to call this feature but it covers all pictures frames edges with flowers, candles whatever you want in backgrounds etc, (not the Alpha channels). I want in the background all around the video when black shows up colorful and around the slides or pictures.

Can you help me figure this out. I did just purchase VideoStudio 2020

      Hello Calvin,

It sounds like you are trying to set up an underlay! To do this, find the video you plan on using as the background and check its runtime. If it is loopable this is less of a concern, but if it isn’t (and you only want to use the one video), this tells you how long your slideshow will need to be to make use of it. You can also speed it up and slow it down with Time Remapping, but that might be a tutorial for another day. Put that video in track 2.

Then, put your images in track 1, so they will appear overtop of the video clip. Adjust their size, time, and position as needed, and you are all set!

To get more fancy, you can use a photoediting program like PaintShop Pro to adjust the photos, cut them into shapes, and apply frames or transparency effects to help make that background effect really stand out. You can find more information on this in our tutorial series on transparency, which starts with Understanding Transparency in PaintShop Pro

      Hope this helps!
